Why bother?

Why write a blog? Especially when you suspect, as I do, that no one will ever read it?

First, I think it would be nice to preserve my thoughts and opinions on the topics that interest me. It will be interesting to look back and see if I was right or wrong. Maybe my ego will be punctured; maybe I will start to think I am a genius. I’m looking forward to it either way.

Second, I like writing and blogging is good practice. I am a slow writer and I think blogging will help me write faster. I also think it will help me develop the clear and concise prose that I enjoy reading.

Third, I hope it will be cathartic. I usually read a few things every week that get me excited. I think I will enjoy writing down my thoughts on these things, rather than prattle on endlessly and annoy the people around me.

And speaking of prattling endlessly, I think that’s about it. I am going to blog for my own amusement and advancement. It is fine if anyone ever hears what I have to say, but I’m just as happy shouting into the void.
